Milestone
A milestone is a significant point or event in a project, with an owner and a due date.
Translation Box: milestone
On the academic side: a publication submission, a thesis defense or a working prototype showing proof of principle.
On the industry side: a deliverable with acceptance criteria that releases the next funding tranche or triggers a go or stop decision.
In a research partnership: a gate review that checks technical readiness and commercial relevance together.
How it's used in a university-industry collaboration
Both sides arrive with different lists, and neither is complete. Write both into one schedule at kickoff, give every entry an owner and a due date, and mark the ones that double as gates for the steering committee. Raise a slipped date at the next operational meeting.
Where this comes from
The definition follows the PMBOK Guide's glossary entry for milestone (Project Management Institute, https://www.pmi.org/pmbok-guide-standards).
What Helikon does with it
Our platform's projects workspace holds milestones with an assignee, due date, and status, flags overdue ones, and emails reminders to the assignee and project owner three days before, one day before, and the day after.
